Sports Massage FAQs
What is sports massage?
Sports massage is a targeted therapy that helps relieve muscle tension, improve flexibility, and enhance recovery. It is beneficial for both athletes and non-athletes, addressing tightness, pain, and mobility issues.
Do I have to be an athlete to benefit from sports massage?
No! Sports massage is beneficial for anyone experiencing muscle tightness, postural imbalances, or general aches and pains. It can help with stress relief, injury prevention, and improving movement.
What should I expect during a session?
Your session will begin with a brief consultation to discuss your needs and any existing conditions. Treatment may include deep tissue techniques, stretching, and mobilisation to address problem areas.
What should I wear to the massage?
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. Depending on the area being treated, you may be asked to remove certain clothing items, but towels or blankets will always be used for comfort and discretion. If working on the legs, shorts are recommended.
Do I need consent from the doctor?
In most cases, no. However, if you have any underlying medical conditions (such as cardiovascular issues, recent surgeries, or certain neurological conditions), it’s best to check with your doctor before booking a massage.
Who can't have a massage?
Massage may not be suitable for conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), open wounds, active infections, first trimester of pregnancy, certain cancers, and severe osteoporosis. If you're unsure, please consult your doctor or discuss your medical history before your appointment.
Does sports massage hurt?
Some discomfort is normal, especially when working on tight or sore muscles. However, treatments are always adjusted to your comfort level to ensure effectiveness without excessive pain.
How often should I get a sports massage?
It depends on your activity level and needs. Regular sessions (e.g., every 2–4 weeks) are great for maintenance, while more frequent treatments may be needed during intense training or injury recovery.
What should I do after my massage?
Drink plenty of water, avoid intense exercise for 24 hours, and follow any aftercare advice given. Some mild soreness is normal but should ease within a day or two.
